Proficiency Scales and The Jeffco Deeper Learning Model
Jan Hoegh from Marzano Research shares this definition, “A proficiency scale is a tool that displays a collection of related learning targets and scores for determining a student's current level of performance.” In this edition of The Pulse from Curriculum & Instruction, we look at the proficiency scale as the centerpiece of the Jeffco Deeper Learning Model. As you look at each section (plan, teach, assess and reflect), consider how a scale could be used. Teacher reflections have also been added to share how teachers from around Jeffco are making sense of scales. We encourage you to engage in conversations with your colleagues to sense make and react to this new tool. It may be helpful to pull up the Jeffco Deeper Learning Model website as you go through each section.

Our work continues to be responsive to the needs of schools through the implementation of the Jeffco Deeper Learning Model. Staff in C&I strive to ensure equitable access to curricular and instructional supports that lay the foundation for students to receive what they need to develop their full academic, career, and social potential by creating resources for teachers to access and utilize. In consideration of Jeffco’s adoption of the revised PK-12th 2020 Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) and Essential Skills, we are partnering side by side with Jeffco educators with the guidance and support of Marzano Research Laboratory to create an equitable guaranteed and viable curriculum. The guarantee of the curriculum lives in the revised prioritized 2020 Colorado Academic Standards that are defined through the Jeffco Proficiency Scales. The viability of the Jeffco curriculum is in the pacing of 2020 CAS across the year through the units of study, within the prioritization of critical concepts The Jeffco Generations Skills bring deeper learning to life through content mastery, identity, and creativity which transforms learning into rich tasks.
